well folks, thanks one final time for an excellent ten weeks. It's been great having you help making a vast improvement to the Mansell street material and you really have helped considerably. If anyone wants to research this site, it's much easier now. Regarding yesterday, I thought the presentations were excellent and clearly a lot of thought and time had gone into them. You should be proud of what you have achieved and hopefully, we will see you again at some point in the future. All the best and enjoy your christmasses. Adam

I have so enjoyed my weeks at the Archives which has gone a little way to fulfilling a childhood ambition of studying archeaology. It's been a long time coming but better late than never. It was wonderful to see and touch first-hand the artefacts. I hope to return again if I get the chance. The chance to talk to the Japanese reporter about the shared learning and U3A re-enforced how glad I am I joined both. The presentations from everyone where interesting, (even Sally's 'adopted 'dog got a quick look in)showing all the hard work and research everyone had put in. Myself (and Jan's) even got a few laughs. I read the letters to my Writing group which they found very interesting. I shall certainly miss my Wednesdays and of course Adam, without whom it would not have been possible. Thanks also to Dan who took over when Adam was away. Look forward to seeing you next year, all being well. Angela

As Adam says, we had a good afternoon, a lot of hard work and concentration and realisation that the presentations are next week and is there time to do everything - what to include? what to leave out? Photos taken, research for better images on the web and a few lessons in learning how to make photos look good within written text, which will be useful for our joint project report which I will be working on in the New Year for ultimate circulation to all the team members, U3A headquarters and LAARC. We have some good topics and I am sure everyone will enjoy the presentations

My last week of packing. It has gone so quickly and I have really enjoyed working in the Archives. I have seen some interesting objects including building materials, animal bones, pottery, glass and jewellery. I think the thing I liked most was the jet bracelet. So now some preparation for my presentation.

A new location for us today, a little warmer ! repacking the animal bones found at MSL 87. The repacking raised the question as to whether fhe animal bones were from the Roman occupation of the cemetery site - Adam seemed to think they were - we then questioned as to what horse/cattle bones were doing there - large offerings to see the Romans on their way - or some other reason ? Any suggestions please let us know. Another good afternoon.
We are disappointed that Adam will not be with us again next week - is it something we have done! We will miss him but realise he needs a well deserved break - enjoy. We look forward to our time with Cath next week.

I did enjoy today's session, not that the others haven't been equally interesting. I just wish I was more familiar with anatomy. Amongst the bones I was packing were what appeared to be horse's teeth. I never realised they were so big. Carol posed the question as to what such a large quantity of bones were doing on a Roman burial site? I know the Egyptians buried food etc with their dead, for the onward journey, but don't believe it was a Roman practice. Maybe they were from a later date and had been used for industrial purposes such as glue-making?

Today we had an interesting talk with slides about conservation. It was fascinating to see how artefacts were dug up and then cleaned. One slide showed a marvellous brooch which was enamelled with rich colours and gold. We then went into the archives and packed and labelled pot shards, which we divided into different materials and colours. There were one or two blue and white patterned pieces and also some green.

Great to view your progress over the last four weeks, with some good photographs of very interesting finds. Surprised to see more recent items as well as Roman grave goods. Especially liked the medieval ring and glass bottle. Jean

One of the finds that I repacked on Wednesday was part of a flue tile. These were not used for roofing but for passing warm air. I thought you would like to see examples of these as they were used insitu so I have (hopefully!) attached 2 photos that I took back in April this year in the well preserved Baths (Spa would be more appropriate) of the Emperor Hadrian at Leptis Magna in Libya. Quite what a flue tile was doing in a graveyard....? Perhaps Adam can give us some idea from the context. Alan.

Is it correct this is medieval and not Roman? I thought it was really beautiful and wonderful to see something so intact. Carol

There were some lovely objects this week and I was lucky to have a jet bangle. I also repacked and labelled tesserae and some ceramic shards. I think the ivory/bone ring was the most interesting. It was totally intact.

Photos are looking great - I've added some more from last week and used some of your ones in last week's entry. Sally's dog started as an example of how to load a picture, but I kinda like him (her?).

I think everyone enjoyed starting work on repacking the finds, I certainly did. We had some interesting boxes, I am sure everyone had something exciting, although it was difficult to see from my end of the table. We had the extremes - some very large and heavy and some very delicate. The time went so quickly. Looking forward to next week. Carol

The part I found most fascinating was to think that these pots had been handled so long ago. You were touching a piece of history. I certainly enjoyed it. Angela

Visited this exhibition yesterday and found it most interesting. How they managed to find some of the tiny bones, especially those of the babies and foetus is amazing. It was interesting to note how many people suffered from rickets. I suppose that was due to the poor diet.
