Week 3 - 8/10/08This is a featured page

This video was useful for week 3 because...

today we packed artefacts! The good, the Bad and the Ugly from Mansell Street!
We started off with fragments of tile and tesserae, not that interesting, a bit ugly in fact.
Janet week 3 - volunteers packing tiles Lilias
So then we moved on to work on the good. And they were really good. Bone, Glass, Flint, Ivory, Stone and Jet.
Already some possible candidates for object of the project, including a beautiful reconstructed glass bottle and a 18th century bone/ivory decorated napkin ring.
The day finished with volunteers continuing the ceramic vessels from last week- some in a pretty bad state. But not once packed properly.
Volunteers were also introduced to registered finds cards, organising finds within boxes and how to write box labels correctly.

One of the finds that I repacked on Wednesday was part of a flue tile. These were not used for roofing but for passing warm air. I thought you would like to see examples of these as they were used insitu so I have (hopefully!) attached 2 photos that I took back in April this year in the well preserved Baths (Spa would be more appropriate) of the Emperor Hadrian at Leptis Magna in Libya.
Quite what a flue tile was doing in a graveyard....? Perhaps Adam can give us some idea from the context.
Alan.

Some wonderful finds this week and once again the time flew by. Great photos added by Angela. I would encourage you all to add your photos, they really bring the SLP alive - so do remember your cameras next week and get posting on the site. Carol

There were some lovely objects this week and I was lucky to have a jet bangle. I also repacked and labelled tesserae and some ceramic shards. I think the ivory/bone ring was the most interesting. It was totally intact.
